I have always loved music, and especially the art of crafting a magical lyric that gives you goosebumps or evokes a memory when you hear it. The list below represents my own ‘favourite lyrics’ for very personal reasons, and though some speak for themselves, many are my favourite due to the association I place with a certain person, moment or event! This list is a personal labour of love, and meant to inspire others to reflect and create their own lists of favourite songs/moments in life!!
“Once in a lifetime
You have seen what I’ve seen
You will always swim for shore
Once in my lifetime
I’ll never be in between
Some things you just can’t ignore”
Once in a Lifetime, Texas – One of my wife’s favourite songs by her favourite band. Song that we got engaged to on December 31st 1999 on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle at a live Texas concert – she said YES, despite being extremely ill that evening!
“I just swear
That I’ll always be there
I give anything
And I will always care
Through weakness and strength
Happiness and sorrow
For better, for worse
I will love you
With every beat of my heart”
From This Moment On, Shania Twain – another relationship moment for my wife and I – our magical first dance at our wedding in Edinburgh, sung by my brother and his wife. Shania’s words in this song epitomise the aspirations of any long-term committed relationship.
“If you’re not the one then why does my soul feel glad today?
If you’re not the one then why does my hand fit yours this way?
If you are not mine then why does your heart return my call?
If you are not mine would I have the strength to stand at all?”
If You’re Not the One, Daniel Bedingfield – the song playing on the radio in the delivery room during my eldest son’s birth. Not sure what Daniel Bedingfield intended, but my connection to my wife and my son during one of the most emotional and nerve wracking moments of my life is irretrievably linked to this song!
“There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done
Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung
Nothing you can say, but you can learn how to play the game
Nothing you can make that can’t be made
No one you can save that can’t be saved
Nothing you can do, but you can learn how to be you in time
All You Need Is Love, The Beatles – Anything and Everything is possible – The Beatles said so, so it must be true!
“Life’s a game made for everyone
And love is a prize”
Wake Me Up, Avicii – the whole song is brilliant, but this one lyric just makes my heart sing every time!
“Sometimes, when I look deep in your eyes I swear I can see your soul”
Sometimes, James – I have to be careful who I am looking at when the lyrics of this song play!
“I love my life
I am powerful
I am beautiful
I am free
I love my life
I am wonderful
I am magical
I am me
I love my life”
Love My Life, Robbie Williams – best affirmation song ever written for building an extraordinary life.
“I heard you die twice, once when they bury you in the grave
And the second time is the last time that somebody mentions your name”
Glorious, Macklemore – How long will your legacy be? When will people cease mentioning your name?
“You might be a big fish
In a little pond
Doesn’t mean you’ve won
‘Cause a long may come
A bigger one”
Lost!, Coldplay – in every life, and every business, there will always be a bigger pond, it is up to us to choose whether to swim to the next level, or enjoy life as a ‘big fish in a little pond’!
“Don’t you worry, don’t you worry child
See heaven’s got a plan for you”
Don’t You Worry Child, Swedish House Mafia – for me, Heaven may have a plan, but I have the privilege of writing My Plan every single day!
