I have described the last 30 days much like anticipating a bunji jump for the first time. The excitement and adrenalin is palpable but so is the fear and anxiety.
One month ago, I left 22 years of employment through 6 different corporate employers to set up my own business and personal development coaching practice (ChrisMillerCoaching).
With Adaptability (Clifton Strengths) very low in my repertoire, my mindset shift from ’employee’ to self-employed has been slower than expected. Specifically, the art and science of generating a reliable flow of prospects and new clients is very much a work in progress. Likewise, the details associated with accounts administration, invoicing, reconciliation and effective budgeting are all new responsibilities that do not play to my natural strengths. While I have outsourced some of these tasks, the ownership for their accuracy remains with me personally.
More than anything, employment felt like the ‘safe’ option for me and my family. While the risk of self-employment is high, the creative (and potentially financial) freedom is exta-ordinary, and cannot compare to the ‘rules’ we live by as an employee.
The joy with which I can live my Purpose and my Values through running a business I can be proud of is a hundred fold easier than living the Values and Purpose of an organisation where I am only a small cog in an enormous machine.
ChrisMillerCoaching offers me the opportunity to do what I do best, love what I do, and do what I love!!
